Toronto One Step Away of Glory After Yesavage Tames Dodgers in Fifth Match

Trey Yesavage turned in a legendary performance and Schneider connected for a homer on the opening pitch as the Blue Jays beat the Dodgers six to one on Wednesday, needing just one more triumph of their first championship since the 1993 season.

Yesavage's Historic Outing

The 22-year-old Yesavage, who made his major league debut in September, recorded 12 strikeouts and zero walks – achieving a historic World Series first. The first-year pitcher surrendered just one run on three hits over seven frames. He started the season in Class A before sparse crowds, but has now earned two starting wins in the series in this best-of-seven series.

A Quick Start for Toronto

Toronto’s hitters gave him breathing room almost immediately. On the first pitch of the game, Schneider turned on a 97mph fastball and sent it over the left-field fence. Immediately after, Vladimir Guerrero Jr homered as well to almost the exact same place. It marked the historic first for the Fall Classic that back-to-back homers started a game, leaving the audience in awe before most had settled in.

Yesavage Takes Control

Yesavage then went to work. He fanned five in a row between the early frames, establishing a new rookie mark before Kiké Hernández finally broke the streak with a solo shot in the third inning to make it 2–1. That was the nearest the Dodgers came.

Building the Advantage

In the fourth, Varsho lined a triple into the right-field corner after a defensive mistake, and Clement delivered a sacrifice fly to plate the run for a 3–1 lead. The Los Angeles offense continued to sputter from there. After managing six runs in a lengthy extra-inning contest, they’ve produced just four runs in their last 29 innings.

Late Inning Insurance

The starting pitcher battled through six and two-thirds innings but exited in the seventh after the Blue Jays loaded the bases. The runners he allowed both crossed the plate – one on a wild pitch and the other on a run-scoring hit – to make it 5–1. A single in the eighth provided the final margin.

Bullpen Secures the Win

Yesavage exited to a standing ovation from the traveling fans, and the relievers finished the job. The bullpen arms each worked a scoreless inning to end the game, combining for three strikeouts while protecting the rookie's gem.

Offensive Woes Continue

The Dodgers, who rearranged their batting order in an attempt to generate runs, again couldn't find momentum. Their star slugger went without a hit in four trips and is now without a hit in his last seven appearances since a record-setting on-base performance in the third game.

On the Verge of a Championship

Now holding a 3-2 lead, Toronto return home with two games to secure the title. Game 6 is Friday night at their home field.
